For 5 months, I worked for the Aprovecho Research Center as part of the Harvey Mudd College Clinic program. Aprovecho tasked our team with improving the Jet-Flame, Aprovechos's clean wood stove attachment, so that it would be more durable, more efficient, and less expensive to manufacture.
We successfully redesigned the Jet-Flame to completely eliminate the 3 critical failure modes, increase efficiency by 12%, and decrease the production cost 30%. I also designed attachments for the Jet-Flame to allow the Jet-Flame to fit in common types of stoves. To validate our new design, I machined new prototypes that increased manufacturability, and we did extensive airflow and burn testing of the new prototypes to confirm the increased efficiency.
